OGRETUBER – Bogner Überschall (non-twin jet model)
Genres: Any genre requiring gain
Uses: Rhythm, Lead, Crunch
The Bogner Uberschall is yet another very popular amp on this list. It’s probably one of the best sounding mid to high gain amps ever made in my opinion. I have personally never been able to afford one but I guess that’s one of the beauties of plugins isn’t it? We get to use $5000 amps for pennies in comparison.
You can hear the Uberschall on albums by Alice in Chains, Avenged Sevenfold, Deftones, Creed, Alter Bridge, Coheed & Cambria, Smashing Pumpkins, Buckethead, Thy Art Is Murder, George Lynch, Tool and many others.
The Ogretuber for a high gain amp is very quiet signal wise. Many of the plugins in the Thermionik package are very low noise and it’s appreciated.
The cleans are there and you can use them if you’d like but clean isn’t really the amps strong suit. Both gain channels on the other hand are pure and complete bliss. You can get anything from a glorious crunch to a wall of saturated death metal and everything in between (yes, it djents). I’m not kidding, the Ogretuber is incredible.
The crunch is where I started. It just has such an awesome bite to it. It cuts through a mix really nicely. Just watch if you boost it because too much tone from a tube screamer can start cutting glass quickly with this plugin. Roll the gain up on the middle channel and you can create awesome thrash tones or really just metal in general.
When you hit the lead channel, it’s time to release the demon. I personally didn’t like the gain over about 5 on the lead channel but with a gate, you could take it up to 7-8 with good results. I liked that even with the gain at 5-6 on the lead channel, the amp still had great note articulation in chords. You can create some more than ideal djent tones on this channel as well.
Boosting should be done with care. Leave the gain at 0 but dial back the tone and level to 5-6 and start there. I have had my boost for the Ogretuber picked out for a while now. The Ignite Amps TS-999 Dead Horse plugin. It really brings out the best in the amp sim and it just happens to be free.
Like the Ogre Excess, I opted to stick with Bogner impulses only this time I had more luck with impulse matches. The Uberschall happens to partner well with the Uberkab (shocker, I know). The Uberkab also happens to be a bit of a legend itself. Many companies have developed Uberkab impulses and most of them sound pretty good with the Ogretuber. If you don’t have any Bogner impulses, I would suggest you check Ownhammer, 3 Sigma Audio and Redwirez for a start.
UPS / DOWNS:
No downs at all unless you count the clean tone which you shouldn’t because that would be silly. That’s like faulting Dave Grohl for not shaving. I love this plugin, I can’t say that enough times. It might take some dialing in, but trust me, it’s worth it.
