A short way of saying it is that GTR does not stand up to today’s standards for a paid product. Personally, I think it’s time for Waves to put the current GTR out to pasture or at very least offer it up for free. However, even if it were free, it would still involve the Waves installation system which is really not worth it.
If this was freeware without the colossal pain of the waves installation process then I would say it would be worth having around for a few nice cutting lead and crunch tones. It’s also got a few nice sounding higher gains. The cleans are boxy and cold but with the right touch they can become useful. The product is not without it’s perks but the look, the sound quality and really everything about it is outdated and there’s no reason for Waves to continue selling it.
The verdict here is that Waves should do a new version of GTR and really put some effort into it. GTR has always felt like a sort of side offering from Waves rather than a product they really tried to drive home and really support. The PRS Supermodels pack of amps brought them back to the game so I hope we see a GTR4 with the same level of quality. They have some of the most talented people in the business designing their plugins so it would be nice to see a high quality multi-amp offering from Waves in the future.
